Bowl Officials and Conference USA announced today that the University of Southern Mississippi has accepted an invitation to the 2008 R+ L Carriers New Orleans Bowl. By winning their final four games of the regular season, Southern Miss became bowl eligible Saturday with their win against SMU. While 2008 will mark the Golden Eagles’ third appearance in the New Orleans Bowl, it will be the teams first under Coach Fedora’s leadership. In his inaugural season, Fedora continues the USM bowl streak, earning them their 7th straight bowl invitation. Southern Miss will play the Sun Belt Conference Champion, to be determined Saturday night when the Arkansas State Red Wolves (6-5) travel to Troy, Alabama to take on the Troy Trojans (7-4). Kickoff is scheduled for 6:00 pm, CST. Bowl officials will be on site to extend the invitation to the winner immediately following the game, including Bowl Chairman Sheriff Paul Valteau, “Southern Miss should provide a great matchup for the SunBelt Conference opponent. Their style of play will be very entertaining for what we expect to be the largest crowd in the history of the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl.” The 2008 R+L Carries New Orleans will be played Sunday, December 21st, in the Louisiana Superdome. USM students and fans are encouraged to purchase tickets by calling the Southern Miss Athletic Department, or by visiting Bowl Central at www.SouthernMiss.com.
